An Initiative of the American Retired Teachers Foundation

A National Mentorship Movement

You Retired From Work.
Not Your Purpose.

America's students need more than tutors. They need steady, wise adults who can help them solve math problems, life problems, and the problem of believing in themselves.

"You've lived the lessons. Now help pass them on."

The Problem

America does not have a shortage of wisdom. It has a distribution problem.

Too many students are falling behind — not just in math, reading, and schoolwork, but in confidence, character, discipline, and hope.

At the same time, millions of retired educators and experienced Americans still have wisdom, energy, and purpose to give.

OWL — Opening Windows to Learning solves that.

The Solution

Help a child solve the quadratic equation — and the human equation.

We connect experienced adults with students who need academic support, encouragement, and a steady mentor. The deeper mission is helping that student learn how to think, persevere, communicate, solve problems, and believe in their future.

Academic Tutoring

Math, reading, writing, study skills, homework help, and problem-solving.

Life Mentorship

Character, confidence, resilience, respect, responsibility, and hope.

Teacher Support

Retired educators support young teachers who are overwhelmed, isolated, or new to the classroom.

The Mission Continues Model

Many join not for the money. They join for the mission.

Where legally and operationally appropriate, mentors may receive a tutoring stipend and choose to donate it back to the foundation — creating a beautiful cycle of renewed purpose and sustained impact.

Any donation-back model is voluntary and structured in compliance with all applicable laws, tax rules, school policies, and nonprofit regulations.

The 8 Keys

Eight Keys to Tutoring Success

Tutor early. Tutor late. Tutor often. Tutor great.

Key 1
Show Up Consistently

Students need to know someone will be there.

Key 2
Listen First, Teach Second

Understand the child before opening the book.

Key 3
Build Confidence Through Small Wins

Confidence compounds.

Key 4
Teach Problem-Solving, Not Just Answers

In the age of AI, students need judgment.

Key 5
Connect Lessons to Real Life

Make learning matter beyond the worksheet.

Key 6
Model Character

Respect, responsibility, grit, kindness, courage.

Key 7
Encourage Family & School Partnership

Support the adults around the student.

Key 8
Keep Growing

Old dogs can learn new tricks. Great mentors keep learning too.

Awards That Keep the Mission Moving

Fast starts. Big wins. Lifelong impact.

People stay in the game when they get early wins. OWL celebrates service, consistency, and impact with visible recognition.

One More Life to Change

You've Still Got One More In You.

If we gave you the chance to change a young person's life, would you take it?

"The best time to start was years ago. The second best time is today."
